Educational Experiences for Families and Community Groups

Ausable Bayfield Conservation offers a wide variety of programs for all age levels.

New for Fall Outdoor Family Experiences

Immerse yourself in nature this autumn. Guided by an Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) staff member, learn about trees, birds, and the many animals that live in and around Morrison Dam Conservation Area. 

Oaks and Acorns (ages 2-5 years old with caregiver)

This outdoor play and inquiry based program takes place in the beautiful woods around Morrison Dam Conservation Area! Learn how to assess risk and help your child explore and deepen their relationship with nature. We meet no matter the weather! Dress for the weather and bring a snack!  

When:  Fridays, October 9 - November 27 (8 sessions)

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. 

Where: Morrison Dam Conservation Area, 71108 Morrison Line

Cost: $80 per family (One adult: Two children)

Who: 2-5 years olds and an adult caregiver

Family Experiences (Maximum 10 people)

Choose from one of the following 'COVID-friendly' ABCA-educator led programs for you and your ‘bubble.’ All programs are 1.5 hours in length. Location and options to book vary for each program.

Option 1: Owl Prowl – Beginning in November, explore Morrison Dam at night with ABCA staff as they lead your group in a hike in search of owls. Learn about what makes these amazing creatures so successful at night. Build a Screech Owl nesting box for an additional fee! Program available at Morrison Dam Conservation Area only; 

Date restrictions: November 1-February 28, not available December 21-January 1

Option 2: Pond Study – Explore the river or reservoir and use nets to collect aquatic creatures. Includes wetland awareness and use of ABCA-supplied equipment. Program available at Morrison Dam Conservation Area and Clinton Conservation Area.

Date restrictions:  Only until mid-November

Option 3: Fantastic Fossils! – Journey through time and learn about the plants and animals that lived here more than 400 million years ago by journeying into the gorge and searching for signs of ancient life. Program available only at Rock Glen Conservation Area.

Date restrictions:  September - October 23

Option 4: Nature Awareness Hike – Explore the natural world as a family through seasonally relevant topics and activities to do along the trail (request a specific focus!) Program is available at Bannockburn Conservation Area; Clinton Conservation Area; Rock Glen Conservation Area; and Morrison Dam Conservation Area. 

Option 5: Christmas in the Forest – Learn about our local wildlife and how they survive the winter. Observe and feed birds. Create environmentally-friendly outdoor tree decorations and ‘presents’ for our animal friends! Conclude your program with a fire and winter story.

Date restrictions: Mid November until December 21

Cost: per family group $70 (up to five people), two families per time slot (maximum 10 people)

Programs available Mondays, Fridays or Saturdays staring at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.; evening starts may vary, suggesting times 6:00-7:30 p.m. or 7:30-9 p.m.

Scout and Guide Badge Requirements

All of our programs have components that will meet one or more of your badge requirements. Speak to us about how we can adjust the program to meet your specific needs. 

Yellow Fish Road™ 

Looking for something with an environmental action component? Choose Yellow Fish Road™. Your group will learn about local water systems and contribute to community action by painting storm drains and distributing resources to homeowners about their connection to local rivers.
