Twelfth South Huron Trail Fundraiser Golf Tourney raising funds for Morrison Line Pedestrian Bridge

Twelfth annual charitable golf tournament to take place on Monday, August 28, 2017 at Ironwood Golf Club east of Exeter; fundraising event is to start earlier in day this year

Organizers of the Twelfth South Huron Trail Fundraiser Golf Tournament say this year’s charitable FUNdraising golf tourney will begin half an hour earlier. The charity event takes place Monday, August 28, 2017 at Ironwood Golf Club east of Exeter. The shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m. with a 1 p.m. lunch.

This annual fundraising golf tourney is a community event in support of a planned new pedestrian bridge on the South Huron Trail. The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation, in partnership with community volunteers, hosts the fundraiser. This is the third year the tournament is held in August. Organizers say the August date has been a hit with golfers and the earlier start time should be well-received by golfers by giving them an earlier start on their day and an earlier finish.

Support for this community fundraising tourney has raised more than $48,000 towards the South Huron Trail over the event’s history, which spans more than a decade. A successful tournament this year could help the event surpass the mark of $50,000 raised. “We are so thankful for the community support each year,” said Bob Radtke, Chairman of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation. “The pedestrian bridge is a special community project for the trail and the fundraising golf tournament is a real community effort. I would like to personally thank the golfers, donors, sponsors, golf course, and volunteers who make this event such a continued success.”

The tournament includes bonus activities such as a $20,000 hole-in-one contest and a putting contest. The charity tourney is in a Texas Scramble Format. The tournament includes 18 holes of golf, cart, and lunch and the cost is $90 per person or $360 for a team of four. Single golfers are welcome to register and will be placed on a team. Those who choose not to golf can attend the lunch only at a cost of $25 per person or they may donate to the Pedestrian Bridge project and receive a charitable gift receipt for income tax purposes.

Junior golfers are welcome at $25 per player, accompanied by an adult golfer on their team. Last year was the first year junior golfers took part alongside other golfers and a junior golfer was on the winning team.

A new pedestrian bridge would be located west of Morrison Line and link the north and south sides of the South Huron Trail so people would not have to walk along the roadway over Morrison Dam. The speed limit along Morrison Line has been reduced and trail crossing signs have been installed on that roadway but the creation of a pedestrian bridge would give a safer alternative to people using the road. The proposed bridge would be the same style as Stirling Bridge which is a steel bridge with boardwalks at both ends. It would be suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, strollers, wheelchairs, and the South Huron Trail Mobile (for people with limited mobility). The new pedestrian bridge will enhance use of the trail for decades, according to supporters of the project.

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation was incorporated in 1974 as a registered, charitable, non-profit organization that promotes accessible trails and other conservation projects in Ausable Bayfield watersheds.
