Family Day WinterFest South Huron to return in 2018

Past Chair hands over reins to new Co-Chairs

Community partners unite to bring back popular Family Day WinterFest South Huron on Holiday Monday, February 19, 2018

Thousands of people visit South Huron area on Family Day holiday
Family Day events to include Lions’ Family Breakfast, free family snowshoeing, much more

The Family Day WinterFest South Huron organizing committee is pleased to announce the popular winter festival is returning in 2018. Past Chair George Finch, who has organized the family-friendly event since 2011, has handed over the reins to new Co-Chairs, Jeff Musser and Dave Frayne. “On behalf of the WinterFest partners, and the South Huron community, I would like to thank George Finch for his years of hard work on this successful event,” said new WinterFest Co-Chair Dave Frayne.

“Dave and I are looking forward to the return of Family Day WinterFest South Huron,” said new WinterFest Co-Chair Jeff Musser. “This event draws thousands of people to the area. Mark your calendars for February 19, 2018.”

Community partners met on December 5 to begin planning for the day-long winter festival which takes place on Holiday Monday, February 19, 2018.  The community groups held their first (and only) organizational meeting to get the ball rolling (or to get the “snowball” rolling). More than 20 community groups join to organize this winter event.

The popular Exeter Lions Club Family Breakfast is one popular event returning in 2018. Free family snowshoeing, by Friends of the South Huron Trail, is another popular returning event. There are also plans for the return of other popular events such as face painting (courtesy of Exeter Lioness Club); horse-drawn wagon rides (courtesy of Miller’s Country Store); indoor archery; Pickle Ball, courtesy of Exeter Senior 55+ Picklers; a big-screen, G-rated movie, courtesy of Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Huron and Starlite Drive-in; outdoor snow hills (weather permitting), courtesy of Municipality of South Huron – Roads Department; outdoor skating rink (weather permitting, courtesy of Exeter Station Firefighters’ Association); free Family Day public skating at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., sponsored by Exeter Lions Club; and fireworks (courtesy of local sponsors and South Huron Fire Department – Exeter Station Firefighters’ Association).

More events are added all the time. When other events are confirmed, they are to be posted online shortly at Some events are at South Huron Recreation Centre and some events are at MacNaughton Park as well as other Exeter and area locations. Most events are free. Visit the website to find out about new events as they are added, to find out times and locations, and to see which events are free and which ones require admission. There are events for all ages and chances for people to try out new things – even if they have never tried them before.

Keep posted as well to the growing list of generous sponsors. Some events depend on snow but there are indoor events as well and “snow or no snow, WinterFest is a go!” (In the case of extreme weather, people are encouraged to visit for any notices or cancellations). The committee encourages anyone who would like to host an event, sponsor an event, or donate to WinterFest to talk to one of the Co-Chairs.

The Exeter Lions Club held its first Family Day Breakfast in 2010. That breakfast has become a popular annual tradition since then. Other community groups joined forces with the Lions Club starting in 2011 to add other family-friendly activities for the holiday Family Monday. The success of the one-day winter festival has continued to “snowball” ever since. “It’s amazing what a community can accomplish when a number of groups and individuals join together to make something good happen,” said WinterFest Co-Chair Dave Frayne.
